Rhyzomic...

The internet is indeed a wonderful thing... Recently I wrote a review of some folksingers whom I went to see rather than going to The Fall gig in nearby Leicester the same night. I'd actually just started listening to The Fall again after a long hiatus – and more for the technical reason that I wanted to hear how Smith delivered his lyrics in the context of the band's music. I am unable to sing any more so was pondering if I could recite or speak words over music and, fired by this re-exposure to MES, tried it out on a couple of recordings – which didn't turn out too badly.

My future as a rapper is now secured.

In the process of re-entering MES's wild and wonderful world for tangental reasons, I fell back into his muse with a vengeance – being someone prone to enthusiams that border on the recklessly compulsive – and have been playing Fall stuff on and off for the last couple of weeks.
During this period, just at the time when I was about to re-launch my blog, some kind comments arrived, firstly from Betty, then Anthony – whose blogs I now enjoy and on which I now intermittently impose my own comments.

One of the links between us was The Fall... so it goes round. Weirdly, the absence of The Fall – in my not-going to their gig – suddenly caused a presence of them... or something equally philosophical. And new connections... and new inspirations...

One is almost tempted to say 'rhyzomic' – well, I am and I just have, so there...

Onwards from this... Betty sent me a row of musical notes to improvise over... I played them on my guitar and then started to wonder what they would sound like in a longer orchestration – so I took the notes, created a theme from them, reversed them and created a mirror theme – both very short – and underpinned it with a bass, using G as a tonal centre, then A, then Bflat and moved between these three centres as a couple of samples and some piano clusters generated from the same row of notes were added. She asked me to end on a random chord – so I did – and repeated it for luck.

Here's a preliminary mix – moody and mysterious...

A song generated by the Internet, uploaded and available for download – in a couple of hours...

A long way from The Fall -and folksingers...

The internet is indeed a wonderful thing... to take a line from Olson – 'The figure of Outwards'...

Miracle , I have managed to grab the computer while my daughter has been taken off to the toilet ...
It is marvellous, the internet. I reckon the piece sounds a bit like a good horror movie soundtrack, in a Marcel Duchamp randomly generated kind of way. I like the sound, the electronic grind in the background.
Isn't it amazing where a few Fall and Lenny Bruce references can take you?
I've been getting back into the Fall too, having just started on the long and lonely task of building back up a collection on CD. Hearing stuff I haven't heard for a few years, it's great.

I'd love to hear the tracks you put down where you were doing a MES. That would be fantastic. Any kind of homage to The Fall is worth hearing. You really should have gone to see The Fall though. Have I told you off enough for that yet? :) And if you've started to listen to them again...then even better. We should all be listening. You should check out Paul's blog too (he is a huge Fall fan too) for some brilliant writing. Truly wonderful stuff.

Thankyou for your kind reference to my blog. That was very sweet of you. Also, I was extremely excited to see the link to the MP3 at the bottom. How lovely is that? And you did it so quickly too!!

I like the way you've made it quite fast, that makes it quite esoteric and slightly unsettling which is great. Strangely enough, as I was listening to it, images from 'Eraserhead' came into head, particularly the little baby sequences. Perhaps that says more about me than anything else!! The images and the music went together very well and I'm sure David Lynch would love to have had that running over those sequences. Also, pop-ups of Google Earth were flying around and that made for a very interesting montage of sound and image.

Did you do that with a keyboard? You must have access to some good equipment there. And how did you make that frightening background sound? I think that's what made me wire into Lynch.

I love the idea of creativity. Creativity, creativity, creativity. There is no space for it anymore. In my years in education, I have seen it squeezed out of the curriculum more and more. It is utterly heartbreaking. Truly it is. One of the most poignant items I treasure is a note from a student saying, 'Miss, you understand what I feel about poetry.' It was such a simple thing, but very touching.

Keep up the music. Keep up the writing. There aren't enough of us keeping the flag flying over this philistine world.

well - I usually work pretty quickly - although I may well go back and re-work things -both in writing and music I just start rolling and see where it goes - usually with an image or images in mind - then once it's there on page/screen or recorded Ican then sit bacvk and really play around with it. This piece was created on my laptop using an app called FL Studio which is pretty powerful - the background noises come from a synthesized wind chimey effect put through a delay and also some samples of rain. Pitter patter...
AS I was working on it, I was thinking about soundtracks - in the back somewhere is the inspiration from your ghoulish story (I think I went to the same school!)... coupled to a kind of awareness of something on the edges - not the Sublime exactly as not in pretentious overdrive today (yet - although I do love that word) - just something indefinable and mysterious-

I wanted to get back into more extensive blogging because I like the idea of banging off 500 words or whatever on anything that comes to mind and having finished two long and complicated projects wanted something that gave me the discipline to sit and write but lightly, for the time being - pitching somewhere between the joke and the essay...

Thankyou - that is great! I'm going to do a music piece in response. Look out for it.

Cor, thanks for that comment. I really enjoyed writing that. Took me ages. Mental note to self: must stop swearing so much!! I had a bit of a blub doing it though because I really wanted to play some music.
